Testing Your Car Battery Using a Voltmeter

Are you having difficulty getting your car to start? You may have a battery issue. Here is a high-level guide to testing your battery using a voltmeter. You can buy a voltmeter at any automotive store. A digital version is easier to read and usually more accurate than an analog version. Before you test the battery, be sure to put on goggles and a pair of rubber gloves for safety.

Attach the positive side of the voltmeter to the positive battery terminal. Then, attach the negative side to the negative battery terminal. Check the voltmeter's reading. A healthy battery should have a reading of 12.4 volts or more. If the reading is below 12.0 volts, you may have a battery issue. It's time to get it to the professionals.

Call the service department here at Burdick BMW. We are happy to test your battery and to recommend a replacement if needed.
