What is front-wheel drive vs. rear-wheel drive?

Have you ever looked at your car’s transmission and drivetrain? If you have a compact car, you probably have a front-wheel drivetrain. This design sends power from the engine through the transmission to your front wheels. In a rear-wheel drivetrain, however, power moves from the engine to the transmission through the driveshaft down to the rear differential. While this design is more complicated, it results in your car being pushed forward. This results in faster acceleration and better handling overall.

Most sports cars have a rear-wheel drive for this reason. When your wheels push forward, you get instant acceleration, but you may not get the same response from a front-wheel drivetrain. There are also vehicles with all-wheel drive that can be configured for front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive, depending on whether you want fuel efficiency or horsepower.

It’s time to get into a new vehicle. What powertrain will you choose? We can show you all of the options when you stop by Burdick BMW to test drive a vehicle and take a spin with us around Cicero.
